FUNCTIONAL BEHAVIOR ASSESSMENTS
A core competency for CPES is working with people who experience multiple and severe co-occurring disorders. The cornerstone to delivering effective services is the development of an individualized treatment plan designed to meet the needs of the individual. Using a Functional Behavioral Assessment to determine the treatment approach and ultimately develop a treatment plan is currently the standard of care (evidenced-based) for treating children and adolescents who present with autism spectrum disorders, as well as a variety of mental illnesses experienced by children and adults
WHAT IS AN FBA?
A Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) is a problem-solving process for addressing a specific behavior or behaviors in order to help change the target behaviors into more desirable ones. The focus when conducting an FBA is on identifying significant social, affective, cognitive, and/or environmental factors associated with the occurrence (and non-occurrence) of specific behaviors. It is a type of assessment that can be used to plan positive ways to prevent or manage behavior problems at school, home, and the community at large.
Once an FBA is completed, the interventions need to be applied consistently and by all individuals who play a key role in the individual’s life in order for change to occur.
